• The Philpott Case – a classic example of Domestic Violence

Back in April this year I was interviewed by LBC Radio (London) with regards to the Michael Philpott case. See the blog here: http://www.tinaroyles.com/tina-royles-interview-on-lbc-the-michael-philpott-trial

More recently, I read an article on the BBC’s website highlighting that this case was a classic example of domestic violence. In particular it refers to his behavior as a ‘classic example of domestic violence’.

During the sentencing, judge Mrs Justice Thirlwall told Mr. Philpott “Women were your chattels, there to look after you and your children. You bark orders and they obey… you were king-pin, no-one else mattered”

Mr. Philpott showed controlling behavior both physically and psychologically over the course of 30 years towards various women. Any money his wives and mistresses earned was paid directly into his bank account, they had no keys to the homes in which they live and they had to ask permission to leave their own home.

The Philpott case highlights the need to take domestic violence awareness, initiative and projects into schools. We need to ensure children and young people are aware of the nature of domestic violence, and the grooming process that takes place with young vulnerable adolescents, in order for them to make more informed decisions to reach out and seek help and support.

It is clear from the case that Michael Philpott preyed on vulnerable young women, and groomed them for his own use, needs and wants.

Sadly this is yet another case of domestic violence which has ended in fatalities through lack of support and assistance.
